General Definition of Work
As vital members of the education team, school counselors play an essential specialized role in promoting a school culture that helps to achieve the school’s mission of successfully educating the whole child to be a lifelong learner and career and college ready. School counselors design, deliver and assess data-driven school counseling programs that are comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature to improve a range of student learning and behavioral outcomes.
Essential Job Functions
- School counselors help all students apply academic achievement strategies.
- School counselors help all students manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills.
- School counselors help all students strengthen mental wellness.
- School counselors help all students explore and plan for postsecondary options such as higher education, military, and work force.
- Develop appropriate classroom and school-wide guidance curriculum activities focused on emotional intelligence and behaviors all students need for postsecondary readiness and personal success.
- Provide career awareness, exploration, and readiness activities.
- Aid students with academic planning and goal setting.
- Provide short-term individual and small group counseling to improve personal skills, address barriers to learning, and support mental wellness.
- Provide referrals for long-term support
- Collaborate with families/teachers/administrators, other SISP/community for student success. Analyze data to identify student needs and plan appropriate counseling services.
- Provide individual, small group, and classroom lessons
- Communicates with parents/guardians in a timely manner; maintains positive and constructive communication with students, staff, parents, and community.
- Protects students, equipment, materials, and facilities taking necessary and reasonable precautions.
- Upholds and enforces board policy, district goals, administrative procedures and school rules and regulations. Adheres to health and safety policies.
- Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
- Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory; Attends workshops, seminars and conferences as well as staff, department, curricular development and committee meetings and staff- development session as required.
- Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state federal laws.
- Shares responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in areas of the school.
- Ability to perform non-instructional duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
Must hold or be able to obtain a Master’s Degree in School Counseling and NC license in School Counseling.
